MAIDEN NEWTON

Nestling between scenic rolling hills in the Frome valley, there are some wonderful opportunities to explore stunning countryside from the station at Maiden Newton.

Beside the main station building you will find the "Welcome" poster designed by the local community to give you all the information you need to find your way round the village.

There is a cosy coffee shop and restaurant - No 64 - combined with the newsagents. Open all day - 9.00 to 5.00 Monday to Saturday - with great value, individually prepared daily lunch specials from 12.00- 2.00. Sylvia and team's tasty cooking has quite a following, so it could be a good idea to book if you are planning on lunch. Tel:01300 320260. Alternatively, if you fancy a pint of Real Ale, lunches are also served at the Chalk & Cheese pub Tel: 01300 320600

You can explore the nearby watermeadows alongside the River Frome - a haven for wildlife with waterbirds and traditional meadow flowers. Once a branch line went down to Bridport from here and there is a poster up at the station describing its history. Much of the old track bed of the disused Bridport branch railway remains, winding through secluded valleys and stunning countryside.

An exciting project is underway for the Maiden Newton To Bridport Trailway. This project aims to open up the route, wherever possible, as a year-round path for cyclists, walkers, wheelchair users and (where permissible) horse riders, offering the eventual prospect of a 10-mile traffic-free path right down to the Jurassic Coast at West Bay. The project is being overseen by cycle path charity SUSTRANS.

A walk into Maiden Newton and its surrounding countryside can be found here.

Maiden Newton station is warmly supported by the village residents, with Sally Falkingham winning a first place national award for her Outstanding Volunteer Contribution to Community Rail in 2006. She continues to play a strong role in our community working party, and has been joined by Stella Amos who designed and is nurturing the station gardens and planters. Station Stoves have taken over the main building, and are helping to make the station more welcoming for visitors and local people. Their range includes contemporary and traditional designs to suit all tastes, and they can design, build, deliver and install. Tel:01300 321623
